10 games you can play with your SO

Isn’t it the best when you finally get your girlfriend into video games? Or your boyfriend. I love dragging Veliko into time-wasting activities, it is so boring to play alone sometimes. Sure, there are those games I just start playing alone, realize they are too scary for me, and ask my knight in shiny armour to finish them while I watch how the story unfolds. This is also a proper couple activity, don’t judge me, although I will refrain from talking about those games in this post. But there are other games that are made to be played in those cold winter evenings when no friends can get you out and Netflix is just too chill to put on.

Personally, I am a huge puzzle fan as you know, so a big portion of the list is made of brain teasers. Others are the good old slash-your-joystick items, the total opposites, sometimes you just need some of those. And then there are the rest, I am looking at you number 7.

1. Portal 2

Talking about the classics. While the single player of the series is a must, the multiplayer will test the relationship with your chosen one the way it should be tested. Can you synchronise a jump, will you solve the puzzle, how many times will you lose in rock-paper-scissors. The important questions in life.

2. Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna)

This game/documentary was in my top 5 in I-don’t-remember-the-year-we-played-it. It was made to be played by a couple. Most of the reviews said the single player is just, how to put it, bad. Can’t say if this is true though, never played it with an AI fox, mine was flesh and blood, jumping and breathing right next to me on the couch. Very touching game.

3. ibb & obb

We are moving into the cute but also ridiculous area. This game had this unique idea that can stretch your nerves thin if you let it. While it can be less rewarding if you like a good story, it has this satisfaction of doing something as a team.

4. Guacamalee! Gold Edition

Want a good story? Grab Guacamelee! Man, this game was weird. No puzzles here though, just one of the best platformers I have played, ever.

5. Don’t Starve Together

For something more unconventional, why not play a game where you gather sticks and leaves in order to survive the night and then wait for the day to do the same thing again? Sounds like real life. Learn how to survive together in this harsh environment! No, really, the game is awesome.

6. Child of Light

Very similar to the number 2 in this list, the girl can play the girl and the boy can play the .. well, the ball of light. Sounds stupid, but if the artwork is your cup of tea and you like when your fights have a turn-based strategy, you can find a real gem here.

7. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

Back to the unconventional, this game even needs some printing before you proceed. It is also supposed to be a party game, but it is a perfect excuse for shouting instructions at your loved one around 2 AM when you are drunk enough and just the two of you. You don’t need other people to diffuse a bomb.

8. FORCED

Forced! I cheated a bit with this one. The game is much better if you add another couple to the mix and just hit it on. There is some strategy as well as good synchronization in your team needed. Good times guaranteed.

9. Sacred Citadel

Reaching the end of the list, Sacred Citadel is a very stupid game, but we loved playing it. I remember how we had to make a very stressful decision and we just postponed it while playing this absolute meh game and found peace and satisfaction in killing orcs and things. Yeah.

10. Trine

I was a beta tester for the first game. That was ages ago. Now there are three games out there and they are good for puzzle solving, fighting and whatever. I ran out of things to say.

I admit there are better lists with some amazing AAA games with great visuals and zombies. While avoiding listing those, I gathered some of my favourite indie games, not just the ones I can enjoy with a friend by my side. But things are better with a friend. Just connect the second joystick and play. Or print the instructions (I am looking at you, number 7).
